Sing Storytime Blog

This blog is for librarians and educators! I will be posting examples of books you can sing and other ways you can incorporate music in your programming.

A Universe of Stories

Summer reading is coming soon!! I have been so excited about this year's theme ever since it was announced it would be space-related. I was in astronomy club and wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid, so, the combo of space and libraries- two of my favorite things- put me over the moon!

So, I've written an original song based on the summer reading theme, "A Universe of Stories." I made my bandmates record it with me in my music room as soon as I wrote it, and you are free to use it to promote your own library's summer reading program if you would like. We'd appreciate a credit if you post it online or on social media!

Here are the song lyrics:

A Universe of Stories - summer reading song by Rebecca Sunshine Band

Outer Space and under the sea,
Super heroes and bravery
Great adventures we can find,
Open up your mind

Magic, scares, and mystery;
Comics, games, and fantasy
Secret lands where wonders abound,
See what can be found

A universe of stories, what will your adventure be?
A universe of stories, come to the library to see!

Imagine places you can go,
Zanzibar or Monaco
Narnia, Hogwarts, Gotham, or space;
Visit every place

Explore the world inside and out,
A million things to learn about
Books and stories, dreams and songs;
Let’s all sing along

A universe of stories, what will your adventure be?
A universe of stories, come to the library to see!

Let’s all blast off into space;
An intergalactic relay race
We’ll seek, we’ll fly, we will explore,
Learning more and more

Outer Space and under the sea,
Super heroes and bravery
Great adventures we can find,
Open up your mind

Explore the world inside and out,
A million things to learn about
Books and stories, dreams and songs;
Let’s all sing along

A universe of stories, what will your adventure be?
A universe of stories, come to the library to see!
A universe of stories, what will your adventure be?
A universe of stories, come to the library to see!
Come to the library to see!
Come to the library to see!

Barnyard Banter

Here's a book by one of my faaaaaavorite authors- Denise Fleming! I love all of her books. "Barnyard Banter" is a great animal sounds book, and it also gets the kids looking for Goose on each page. I sing this one to the tune of "Skip to My Lou."

Driving My Tractor

Here's a super-fun book you can sing in storytime- "Driving My Tractor" by Jan Dobbins and David Sim. This is one of the books published by Barefoot Books; I love them! This publisher has tons of great books you can sing, and most of them come with a CD.

You don't have to sing the book as it was recorded; it's okay to choose any melody you think fits the rhythm of the story. I do that a lot! But, I sing this one just like the recording. It's a great tune! After I've gone through a page or two, the kids and parents start singing along with the repeated "Chug, Chug, Clank Clank Toot!" every time. Tons of fun.
